Corporate foresight as an instrument for the future

As part of a master’s thesis, we have spent the past few months looking at how trend and innovation management can be strategically anchored in a company in order to actively shape its future development. A total of twelve interviews were conducted with internal and external experts to identify suitable instruments and analyze the status quo.

The concept of corporate foresight offers a range of valuable approaches and corresponding models for responding to changes in the corporate environment at an early stage. The goal is to ensure long-term future viability by detecting weak signals in the market and technology environment of the organization. In addition, the detached, continuous monitoring of relevant socio-economic trends is recommended, as these often form the basis for subsequent developments on the market and technology side.

A strategic approach to the issue is indispensable, because a holistic view is needed to implement the concept with the necessary attention and commitment and to anchor it in the company.

René Rohrbeck has played a key role in shaping research on corporate foresight and, by evaluating relevant case studies, has developed a maturity model that can provide concrete support in assessing and developing a company’s own future viability. However, a prerequisite for the application of this maturity model is an examination of one’s own corporate context. In concrete terms, this means that relevant players must acquire an awareness of their own success factors (strategy alignment, success drivers, corporate culture) and of the industry (industry clock speed, complexity of the environment).

The maturity model is based on 5 dimensions that reflect certain skills in future orientation. Information usage describes how and from where relevant information is obtained. This information is continuously transformed into knowledge and understanding using mature methods. The basis for this is the selection of people and networks who, based on their experience and personalities, develop and share this understanding. The organization is of elementary importance when it comes to establishing appropriate processes and responsibilities. In addition, a corporate culture ideally characterized by openness, transparency and a spirit of innovation hovers over everything.

While many companies do collect and classify weak signals, there is often a lack of holistic consideration and systematization. Internal complexity with long decision-making processes, resting on the status quo, and the strict daily routine in day-to-day business represent barriers to the implementation of corporate foresight activities.

Here, it is important to establish concrete processes, develop methodological competence and create scope. An iteratively developed process can form the basis for implementing corporate foresight elements. The active participation of top management is important here. This creates a mutual commitment and an awareness of relevant developments. The establishment of focus groups and a network of internal and external innovation scouts can map the necessary resources that systematically procure and classify information and transform it into an understanding. The integration of IT tools (with automation, if possible) can also facilitate information gathering.

On the one hand, this understanding can be used to concretely implement new innovation projects in the specialist departments. Furthermore, the collected insights can be the basis for strategic adjustments in portfolio management or scenario analysis. Another possibility is to use the collected information to continuously challenge existing R&D projects. Thus, it can be ensured that these projects remain in line with market and technology developments.

The concept of corporate foresight therefore has a great deal of potential, which can take many different forms. Companies that want to actively deal with their future can already make progress by implementing individual elements and develop their capabilities step by step. For example, NEDGEX has already successfully developed and implemented a business model based on the Gartner Hype Cycle as a trend tool.
