Ende Januar 2022 wird zusammen mit dem Digital Sounding Board der sogenannte „EXIT“ des Corporate Startup-Projektes „CHAIN“ beschlossen.
Nach mehr als zweieinhalb Jahren harter, aber auch sehr lehrreicher Arbeit konnten die ambitionierten Ziele und Arbeitshypothesen leider nicht erreicht werden, so dass man ein sich selbst finanzierendes Geschäft am Markt hätte kurzfristig aufbauen können.
Trotz mehrerer namhafter Kunden, Aufträge und somit auch Umsätzen, die das Team um Bernhard Diemer besonders im letzten Jahr gewonnen hatte, mussten wir feststellen, das Markt und Kunde aktuell für das Thema „Digital Asset Twin“ noch nicht in dem Maße vorhanden ist, wie wir in den Validierungs-Phasen des Projektes prognostiziert hatten. Dies trotz der gewonnenen SAP Partnerschaft und dem immer wieder durchaus guten Kundenfeedback.
Dazu Bernhard Diemer, Leiter Business Field CHAIN bei NEDGEX: „Wir glauben weiterhin, dass sich das Thema Asset Intelligence Network durchsetzen wird, nur ist wohl jetzt nicht der richtige Zeitpunkt, damit einen validen Business Case umzusetzen, mit dem man als Consulting Unternehmen Geld verdienen kann.“ 💬
Wie geht es nun weiter ?
Das CHAIN-Team wird bis Ende Q1/22 alle Kundenaufträge abarbeiten und Verträge erfüllen.
Parallel dazu wird eine ausführliche „Lessons Learned“ erarbeitet, um die Erfahrungen und Erkenntnisse zu sammeln, aufzubereiten und in den nächsten Projekten zu beachten.
Dies ist übrigens das Allerwichtigste! Scheitern gehört zum Innovationsgeschäft dazu. Daraus zu lernen ist das A und O. Hierzu hat uns auch das Management im Digital Sounding Board noch einmal ermutigt.
Die Mitarbeiter im CHAIN-Team sind bis Ende Q2 noch finanziert und aktiv. Parallel dazu laufen diverse Gespräche für den sogenannten „Fallback“ in die NETZSCH Gruppe. D. h. konkret werden Einsatzmöglichkeiten in den Geschäftsbereichen ausgelotet, in denen man das Expertenwissen und vor allem die gemachten Erfahrungen sinnvoll einsetzen kann. Einige KollegInnen werden sich aber auch extern am Markt neuen Herausforderungen stellen.

Digital business model project CHAIN is discontinued
At the end of January 2022, in conjunction with the Digital Sounding Board, the “EXIT” of the corporate startup project “CHAIN” is decided.
After more than two and a half years of hard, but also very instructive work, the ambitious goals and working hypotheses could unfortunately not be achieved, so that a self-financing business could have been established on the market in the short term.
Despite several well-known customers, orders and thus also sales, which the team around Bernhard Diemer had won especially in the last year, we had to realize that the market and customer for the topic “Digital Asset Twin” is currently not yet present to the extent that we had predicted in the validation phases of the project. This is despite the SAP partnership and the consistently good customer feedback.
Bernhard Diemer, Head of Business Field CHAIN at NEDGEX, comments: “We continue to believe that the Asset Intelligence Network topic will become established, it’s just that now is probably not the right time to implement a valid business case with it, with which you can earn money as a consulting company.” 💬
What is the next step?
The CHAIN team will process all customer orders and fulfill contracts by the end of Q1/22.
In parallel, a detailed “Lessons Learned” will be worked out to collect and process the experiences and insights and to consider them in the next projects.
By the way, this is the most important thing! Learning from the failure of an idea – failure is part of the innovation business. The management on the Digital Sounding Board also encouraged us to keep on exploring new roads.
The employees in the CHAIN team are still funded and actively working until the end of Q2. At the same time, there are discussions for the so-called “fallback” to the NETZSCH Group. Meaning concrete possibilities for deployment in the business units are being explored, in which the expert knowledge and, above all, the experience gained can be put to good use. However, some colleagues will also face new challenges externally on the market.
